How do you know? How do I know?
We who gaze into the pool of forgetfulness
Admiring and dreading
No, no, ..... that is not.....
Does something stir?
Can I measure your true name?
Will you pause a moment,
Lift your arm, sir,
While I do?
No, no, ..... that is not.....
Can I do it myself then
All reflections abandoned
Deep and spiritual and...
Alone in my conceit
No, no, ..... that is not.....
I shall clothe you in vermillion
And falling gold of autumn
Turning front and back
Front and back
And we shall dance for
Is there not one
Who is always calling
Calling my true name?
And is that not melody
Enough?

Is there Anybody in There?

I feel as if I only exist in the eyes of other. I feel so unreal. Where am I? What can I do, or not do?

The first thing: it is not only me who only exists in the eyes of others; everybody is existing that way. That is the common way of existence. We use the other as a mirror. Others’ opinions become very important, of immense value because they define us. Somebody says we are so beautiful; in that moment we become beautiful. Somebody says we are a fool; in that moment we start suspecting; maybe we are a fool? We may get angry, we may deny, but deep down we have become suspicious about our intelligence....

If we want to know who we are, we will have even to close our eyes; we will have to go withinwards. We will have to forget the whole world, we will have to forget what they say about us. We will have to go deep inside and encounter our own reality. Not to depend on others, not to look in their eyes. There are no clues in their eyes. They are as unaware as we are — how can they define us?

We are looking into each other’s eyes to find who we are. Yes, some reflections are there, our face is reflected. But our face is not us; we are far behind the face. Our face has been changing so much that we can’t be our face.

...We are not the face. Somewhere deep down hidden is our consciousness; it is never reflected into anybody’s eyes. Yes, a few things are reflected: our actions. We do something; it is reflected into others’ eyes. But our doing is not us. We are far greater than our actions....

Our being is never reflected in the eyes of others. Our being we have to come to know only in one way...and that is by closing our eyes to all the mirrors. We have to enter into our own inward existence, to face it directly. Nobody can give us any idea of it, what it is. We can know it, but not from others. It can never be a borrowed knowledge, it can only be a direct experience, a direct experiencing, immediate.

One day we will meet for real.
